The local guide

Out and about in Berwick.

England’s most northerly town, ringed by Elizabethan ramparts, with the Tweed on one side and the North Sea on the other. A few favourites to get you started.

Day trip · Tidal island

Holy Island

Drive across the sea at low tide to priory ruins, a castle on a rock and a village that’s cut off twice a day. Plan the day around the tide, not the clock.

Safe crossing times

The official Northumberland County Council table. Only cross inside the safe times.

Castle · Beach

Bamburgh

A castle on a rocky outcrop above miles of wide, empty sand. Walk the beach first and look back at it from the dunes, then go in for the State Rooms.

Berwick’s walls

A complete ring of Elizabethan ramparts around the old town, about 1¼ miles round. Free, open all year, and best at golden hour.

In town · The Tweed

Royal Border Bridge

Twenty-eight arches, built by Robert Stephenson and opened by Queen Victoria in 1850. Wait on the riverside for a train to cross at sunset. Despite the name, it isn’t on the border.

In town · The pier

Berwick lighthouse

Walk out along the pier to the lighthouse, built in 1826 and still looked after by the Harbour Commissioners. Save it for a calm day: the pier is exposed when the sea is up.
